Facial sunburn treatment

If you get a sunburn on your face, it can take a couple of days for the severity of the burn to become apparent, and several more days for the skin to start to heal.

A facial sunburn  treatment won't completely cure  your skin, but it can reduce pain, swelling, and discomfort.

But if home care does not help you recover, or your sunburn is very severe, you should consult a doctor, who may offer you additional treatments, or admit you to the hospital.

Here are the best ways to treat sunburn for the face at home, that will help you recover in a short time:

1. Reducing the chance of infection with medication

You can take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, such as ibuprofen, naproxen, or aspirin, at the first signs of a sunburn to help reduce irritation and inflammation.

You may continue to use NSAIDs as directed on the label until your burning condition is better.

You can also use Hydrocortisone cream 1% for a few days to help calm redness, swelling, and itching, but after consulting a doctor and taking a prescription, due to the sensitivity of the nature of the facial skin.

2. Cooling the face

You can treat a facial sunburn by cooling the affected skin on your face. Some treatments include bathing to relieve sunburn pain and other symptoms. You can also add one of these natural cooling agents:

  • Add a cup of  apple cider vinegar  to your bathtub to help balance the pH of sunburned skin and promote healing.
  • Apply oatmeal to your skin, as this is especially beneficial for itchy, burning skin.
  • Add a few drops of lavender or chamomile essential oil to your bathtub to help relieve irritation and pain.
  • Add two cups of baking soda to the bathtub to help relieve irritation and redness from sunburn.

3. Drink more water

Sunburn draws fluids to the surface of the skin away from the rest of your body, so drinking adequate amounts of water when you get a sunburn can help prevent dehydration.

4. Take care to protect sunburned skin while it recovers

Wear a hat that covers your skin when you are outside, in order to protect your skin from the sun's rays, which may cause an increase in facial burns.

Although a facial sunburn may seem temporary, it can cause long-term skin damage from exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays, which can increase your risk of  skin cancer  .

5. Apply cold compresses

You can apply the following options of compresses:

  • Putting compresses of  milk   or cold milk on your sunburned face, as this may help produce a protein layer that has the ability to reduce the feeling of sunburn.
  • Peel the cucumber, then puree it in a blender, and when it becomes a paste, apply it to your sunburned skin, including the face.
  • Treating sunburn on the face by boiling peeled potatoes and mashing them, and placing them as a bandage on the face after it cools down.
  • Using aloe vera gel, and applying it to your face, it is safe to use and has effective results.

6. Moisturizing the face

Use a moisturizer that contains aloe vera or soy to help soothe sunburned skin.

7. Avoid popping pimples

If your skin blisters, allow it to take its time to heal, as it does mean you have a second-degree sunburn.

Blisters should not be popped, as blisters are formed to help the skin heal and protect it from infection.

But if you do pop one, clean it up with mild soap and water.
